Design Platform

Building the Design Platform of the Future

Building the Design Platform As most of you are probably aware, we have introduced a new cloud-based, design-to-manufacturing portfolio called 3DEXPERIENCE WORKS. We know this makes some of you a little uneasy, as you see it as a replacement for your beloved SOLIDWORKS. I am here to tell you that is simply not true. By connecting SOLIDWORKS to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, our users will have the ability to embrace tools that were beyond their reach before. First, however, let’s discuss the reasons behind the move to the cloud. Is Moore’s Law dead? The CEO of Nvidia, Jensen Huang, famously declared the death of Moore’s Law at last year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Moore’s Law is the long-held notion that the processing power of computers increases exponentially every couple of years. However, it might have reached its limit. I’m not here to fuel the debate on this issue, but one thing is undoubtedly true: computer speed is not increasing at the rate it once did, while the need for more computational power to process AI-based algorithms or more complex simulation is increasing faster than ever. As millions of people across the world are now learning and working from home due to the coronavirus, internet networks have been put to the test. They have, for the most part, persevered as have the legions of workers suddenly now working remotely. In order to keep pace with delivering the advanced engineering capabilities our users will need to compete in today’s challenging markets as well as those of the future, our R&D team realized we needed to make the transition to a cloud-based product development environment. We have done just this with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, and the solutions tailored specifically to our SOLIDWORKS users with the 3DEXPERIENCE WORKS portfolio. Let’s take a look at some of the advantages of a platform-based approach to product development. Get better insights from your data Every product development company’s most important asset is its data. A platform approach to product development enables that data to be safely shared and collaborated on in real-time with key stakeholders, both inside and outside of your company. With intuitive access to real-time data, you can manage its complexity and make better-informed decisions faster which leads to greater profitability. 3DEXPERIENCE WORKS offers roles specialized in market and business intelligence that are key to operational excellence and optimal business performance. Improved collaboration Most of us know that better collaboration leads to higher levels of innovation, however, working together without the proper tools in place has always been a challenge. With 3DEXPERIENCE WORKS, collaboration tools are intuitive and everyone is working in the same system, facilitating the exchange of ideas, improving coordination, assuring traceability and accountability, and fostering more innovation. One single source of truth A single, online, always available “source of truth” makes companies more agile, more flexible, and resilient to disruptions like we are seeing today. By having one single source of truth, you can quickly get to the root cause of problems and more rapidly resolve them, increasing quality and ultimately, customer satisfaction. Digital continuity Product development using the 3DEXPERIENCE WORKS solutions assures digital continuity, meaning companies can automate updates of both software and data so everyone is on the same release and on the same page as far as product status because everyone is always working on real-time data. Time-consuming updates are now a thing of the past. Get connected By connecting SOLIDWORKS to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, you can create seamless product development workflows and easily extend them with new tools as your business needs evolve. This connected design-to-manufacturing ecosystem in the cloud enables teams to collaborate on real-time data anywhere and at any time on any Internet-enabled device. Less IT cost and burden Perhaps one of the biggest advantages of working in a cloud-based product development environment, such as the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, is that the cost of your IT infrastructure is significantly lowered. No longer do you need powerful, expensive workstations and servers. You also have the ability to scale up—or down—as needed and add new tools, such as advanced simulation, that you never dreamt possible. Do more with your IP By moving your SOLIDWORKS data to the cloud, you can still use the SOLIDWORKS you know and love but also reap the benefits of built-in data management that enable you to do more with your data. Design your way Only you know what’s best for your company so SOLIDWORKS provides design and development tools on the desktop; pure cloud-based tools, such as 3D Creator; or a hybrid approach that enables you to use SOLIDWORKS on the desktop and then connect it to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform so you can collaborate with any of your key stakeholders anywhere and on any device.

SOLIDWORKS

Industrial Design to Hand Mould in SOLIDWORKS

I have completed my Post Diploma in plastic mold design. There I studied about plastic like mold, how many types of mold are present, how we manufacture plastics and many more. When I got a job as a technical executive in SOLIDWORKS you won’t believe that SOLIDWORKS proved that it is one of the easiest, fastest and convenient software for designing. We can easily extract core and cavity, we can analysis plastics easily and many more. Now I will show you how it is useful in SOLIDWORKS. Before that, I would like to share briefly  about, mold, hand mold, and how it will be helpful for the designer to execute in  SOLIDWORKS MOULD:- Mould means a combination of two mold halves i.e. Core and Cavity…Core means it is the internal part of the mold and Cavity means it is the external part of the mold. Let’s Know about Hand Mould – In injection moulding, hand molds are the simple mold which is used in less quantity. There is no supply of heat, cooling, or ejection. Heating plates are essential in every cycle time of hand mold to heat the molds and after every cycle time, we have to remove the mold to get the product. As a result, it enhances the cycle time, its limit is for short run and mold cost is low. Almost hand mold has a single cavity but we can make multi-cavity by making the mold small in construction. To make part simple it is usually of 2 plate mold or 3 plate mold. For short form of the mold it can be made from aluminium brass and for the requirement of more parts, then they are made from conventional steels. SOLIDWORKS gives a great advantage with design and validation of parts and tools in one system. Designers can demonstrate that parts can be molded successfully, along with the checking for draft, thickness, and undercuts to ensure the correct geometry for molding. Mould Design Capabilities in SOLIDWORKS Standard:- Complete plastic part and advanced surfacing design tools Geometry Import, Repair, and Healing tools Draft Analysis, Undercut Analysis, and Thickness Analysis tools Parting line tools Parting surface tools Automated “fill surface” capability for easy shutoff surface creation Core and cavity splitting tools SOLIDWORKS 3D mold bases available online and directly from major mold suppliers SOLIDWORKS configurations to create customizable configurations of molds and mold components Compare Part tools to visually see in 3D what geometry was added or removed when design changes occur Production quality mold drawing creation tools Seamless integrations with several industries leading CAM products allowing NC tool paths to automatically update with part design and tooling changes.

SOLIDWORKS MBD

How to Manage 3D PDF Attachments Using SOLIDWORKS

SOLIDWORKS MBD can help you attach multiple documents before publishing a 3D PDF To collaborate with suppliers, engineers often need to send technical documents such as CAD models, neutral STEP files, 2D drawings, QA provisions, and internal standards. This list goes on, and each document in this long list may generate its own revisions over time. In order to consolidate the fragmented documents, the U.S. Military Standard 31000A: 2013 recommended a concept called Technical Data Package (TDP). The gist is to bundle multiple technical documents together into one package to avoid disorganized individual files, in a way similar to shipping containers or closet organizers. Even if you don’t have to comply with the military standard, this practice still makes sense. One packaging tool presented in the standard is 3D PDF. It allows multiple attachments as shown in Figure 1. You may download the 3D PDF at the SOLIDWORKS MBD forum and check it out in Adobe Reader. Please don’t open a 3D PDF in your browser because the browser would disable the 3D content.   You may notice four component documents are attached on the left. You may double-click to view them separately or save them locally. SOLIDWORKS MBD can help you attach multiple documents before publishing a 3D PDF. However, depending on your Adobe Reader settings, sometimes you may run into this dialog as shown in Figure 2 when trying to open a SOLIDWORKS part from the attachment list. It says Acrobat cannot open this file attachment because your PDF file attachment settings do not allow this file type to be opened. The reason is that Adobe Reader version 11 and later added a layer of protection to avoid any malware. If you trust the data you received in a 3D PDF, you can adjust the PDF file attachment settings under the menu Edit, then Preference, and then Trust Manager, as shown in Figure 3. After checking this box, you will see a prompted dialog upon double clicking on an attachment as shown in Figure 4. In this way you can decide on a case-by-case basis whether you want to open a file. You can also decide to always or never allow file of this type to avoid making the same duplicated selections going forward. I hope this blog post is helpful for your collaboration with suppliers using 3D PDF as a technical data package.
